Rogers Electric’s Approach to Risk Assessments

3 min read

At Rogers Electric, safety is not just a requirement, it is a commitment to providing continuous excellence throughout all of our operations. That’s why electrical risk assessments are a vital factor in the services we provide and on the jobsite. Whether we’re servicing a national retail chain or upgrading a facility’s electrical system, our approach is consistent with our values.

We identify hazards before they become incidents and develop efficient, actionable plans to tackle electrical risks across the board. We also ensure our employees remain safe on the jobsite and are informed of all risks before they even start work for the day.

What Is an Electrical Risk Assessment?

An electrical risk assessment is a process that involves identifying and evaluating electrical hazards within an electrical system or equipment on the jobsite.

Our goal is to ensure a safe working environment by recognizing potential risks like electrical shock and equipment failure. We implement controls to reduce any incidents and our assessments support compliance with set industry standards. We strive to promote safety culture and operational efficiency.

Why It Matters?

Safety is not just a priority; it’s a fundamental part of successful and productive operations. Conducting electrical risk assessments can be the difference between a smooth workday and a costly, unexpected incident or delay.

Operational Risk Management

Operational Risk Management (ORM) is a foundational element of Rogers Electric’s safety and risk management. This planning process takes place when  teams first get to the jobsite and is consistently applied as a part of their daily operations. By identifying potential hazards, ORM significantly enhances the likelihood of completing tasks safely and successfully.

Through this approach, risks are reduced, job site resources are optimized, and overall efficiency is improved. ORM also promotes clear role definition and strengthens accountability across teams. Most importantly, it ensures our field workers put safety first and that there is a safer work environment for everyone involved.

ORM takes place each morning with the crew and a whiteboard. Every jobsite Rogers Electric services is required to have an ORM whiteboard onsite and the job cannot begin until each of the five elements is gone through entirely.

The process begins with a review of feedback from the previous workday, then shifts to outlining and addressing the specific tasks scheduled for the current day.

The whiteboard serves as a main communication tool on the job site. It remains posted throughout the day to ensure that all crew members have ongoing access to safety updates. When conditions change or new risks are identified, updates are made in real time, allowing the entire team to stay informed and aligned.

Elements of ORM

  • Define the Scope of Work- Outlining the jobs to be performed, including who is involved, where it will take place, and what equipment or procedures are required. A well-defined scope sets the foundation for accurate hazard identification.
  • Analyze the Hazards- Identify potential risks associated with the job, the environment, and any tools or machinery involved. This step focuses on recognizing both routine and unexpected hazards that could impact safety or performance.
  • Develop and Implement Hazard Controls- Determine practical steps to eliminate or mitigate each identified hazard. This may include engineering controls, administrative procedures, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), or modifying the task approach.
  • Perform Work Within Hazard Controls- Carry out the job in full compliance with the established hazard controls. Crews must remain aware of their surroundings and adjust as needed if conditions change during the job.
  • Provide Feedback and Continuous Improvement- After the workday is finished, the team evaluates what went well and where improvements can be made. Lessons learned are captured and used for future planning and safety performance.
